Book Review – The Couple Next Door

I’ve just finished reading this one so I thought I’d do a review! I have been wanting to read this one for quite some time now, as it seems like a popular one amoungst the book community. Today I’ll be reviewing..

The Couple Next Door by Shari Lapena

“Anne and Marco Conti seem to have it all–a loving relationship, a wonderful home, and their beautiful baby, Cora. But one night when they are at a dinner party next door, a terrible crime is committed. Suspicion immediately focuses on the parents. But the truth is a much more complicated story.

Inside the curtained house, an unsettling account of what actually happened unfolds. Detective Rasbach knows that the panicked couple is hiding something. Both Anne and Marco soon discover that the other is keeping secrets, secrets they’ve kept for years.

What follows is the nerve-racking unraveling of a family–a chilling tale of deception, duplicity, and unfaithfulness that will keep you breathless until the final shocking twist.”

***Kind of contains spoilers***

At the start I really enjoyed this book, but when I got to half way it all became pretty ridiculous. Though I can’t really pinpoint WHY I felt this way about it. It just seemed so ridiculous and stupid. I don’t know what kind of Father would put his own daughter in this sort of situation. What an actual idiot. He was a pretty terrible character. The parents were both stupid for leaving their baby in the house alone… like who would do that? If I was invited to a dinner party and wasn’t allowed to bring my baby or couldn’t get a sitter, I wouldn’t go..

The part where it should have been really climatic, just wasn’t. It just happened all of the sudden. No good lead up. This really brought the book down. A few good twists & turns in the book, but that was about it.

I actually liked the ending of this one! Which is a big shock for me as I am always disappointed of the endings in books.

There are a lot of mixed reviews of this one on Goodreads and I’m glad I’m not alone in how I feel about it. I’d be interested to hear your thoughts in the comments below if you have read it.

The genres of this one are mystery, thriller, fiction & suspense.

I give this one a 5/10!

Thank you for reading my review 😊

That’s such a shame that you didn’t enjoy it. I’ve wanted to read this book for a while now but just haven’t gotten around to it. I once read a book that seems to me to be just as ridiculous, it was supposed to be a thriller but all it talked about was the main couple having sex all the time and the man in the couple was just so stuck on what he wanted.
