Book Review – The Safe Place

Welcome to yet another book review! I had my eye on this book for a while, sitting on my bookshelf. I like to stick to reading my books in order of when I bought them – not really sure why haha but I’ve finally read it and I’m going to tell you my thoughts 😊

The Safe Place by Anna Downes

Emily is a mess.

Emily Proudman just lost her acting agent, her job, and her apartment in one miserable day.

Emily is desperate.

Scott Denny, a successful and charismatic CEO, has a problem that neither his business acumen nor vast wealth can fix. Until he meets Emily.

Emily is perfect.

Scott offers Emily a summer job as a housekeeper on his remote, beautiful French estate. Enchanted by his lovely wife Nina, and his eccentric young daughter, Aurelia, Emily falls headlong into this oasis of wine-soaked days by the pool. But soon Emily realizes that Scott and Nina are hiding dangerous secrets, and if she doesn’t play along, the consequences could be deadly.”

I’m going to be honest – this one didn’t wow me like I thought it was going to. It was all a bit flat which really sucks! I feel like not much happened in it.

I predicted what the truth was shortly after Emily arrived at the estate. A few parts I read I thought ‘hmm, something weird is going on here’ and that got me excited but I don’t know, it just fell short. Not a bad read but it didn’t reach my expectations sadly. I liked the book cover though and it was a good ‘escape’ from the pandemic.

I don’t even know what it was, but something was just ‘off’ about the book?? Something was missing? I don’t know if anyone else has felt like that after reading? It just was meh to me. It’s disappointing as I was really looking forward to this one. I think my expectations were just too high.

If you’ve read this one, let me know what you thought! I’ve looked through a few reviews on Goodreads and others have felt the same way as me, which makes me feel relieved. Very predictable, felt unfinished and really wanted more from it.

The genres of this one are thriller, fiction, mystery and suspense.

About the Author
Anna Downes was born and spent the first part of her life in the UK. She now currently lives in Sydney, Australia with her husband and two children. She was an actress but then turned her attention to writing. Her inspiration for this book was from her own experience of working as a live-in housekeeper on a remote French estate.

I rate this one a 5/10

Thank you for reading my review, I’m sorry it wasn’t much of a positive one!
