Book Review – The Scholar

I have finished yet another book, which means its time for a review! I picked this one up in my last book haul 😊 Lets get into the review! The book I’m reviewing today is…

The Scholar by Dervla McTiernan

“When DS Cormac Reilly’s girlfriend Emma stumbles across the victim of a hit and run early one morning, he is first on the scene of a murder that would otherwise never have been assigned to him. The dead girl is carrying an ID, that of Carline Darcy, heir apparent to Darcy Therapeutics, Ireland’s most successful pharmaceutical company. Darcy Therapeutics has a finger in every pie, from sponsoring university research facilities to funding political parties to philanthropy – it has funded Emma’s own ground-breaking research. The investigation into Carline’s death promises to be high profile and high pressure.

As Cormac investigates, evidence mounts that the death is linked to a Darcy laboratory and, increasingly, to Emma herself. Cormac is sure she couldn’t be involved, but how well does he really know her? After all, this isn’t the first time Emma’s been accused of murder…”

Now that I’m doing this review, according to Goodreads, this is #2 in sort of a series, so it makes sense why it took me a bit to get into it at the start. I eventually got into it and thoroughly enjoyed it. This one was based in Ireland – I’m not sure if I’ve actually read a book where the story is based in Ireland, but I could be wrong! The genre was more crime to me than thriller/mystery. Not my favourite book I’ve read but it was entertaining, and I didn’t guess the killer either which was nice.

I thought there could have been more to the ending – I feel like it didn’t really finish properly, but that is because there is a third book in the series, which follows this book. I’m only finding this out now though as I write this 😑

I did end up enjoying this one, worth a read if you’re into crime!

The genres for this one are mystery, crime, fiction & thriller.

I rate this one a 7/10 😊

Happy reading! 📚
